School’s out and summer is officially here! Are you and your kids looking to escape the heat and explore the Eastern Sierra?

If so, we hope you’ll join us on July 29 for our first-ever Crayons & Paint: a free family day of games, learning, and exploration out on the land you’ve helped protect forever.

Crayons & Paint

Saturday, July 29
9am – 3pm
Karen’s Preserve (near Crowley Lake)

Crayons & Paint will be an opportunity for families with children between the ages of 5 and 15 to have fun getting creative in nature.

Alongside other kids and their parents, you’ll play games to learn more about local wildlife, animal tracks, native plants, and more. We’ll do art projects together out in the wild, and then sit down in the shade for a bring-your-own picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll take a kid-friendly hike around the Preserve, taking time to participate in trail games your whole family will enjoy. And at the end of the day, all participants will go home with an activity book to keep the outdoor fun and learning going all summer long.

RSVP’s are mandatory because attendance at this event is limited. If you’d like to join us, contact ESLT’s Education Coordinator & AmeriCorps Member, Indigo Johnson, at or (760) 873-4554!

About Karen’s Preserve:

For mule deer and mountain lions, songbirds and eagles, and people of all ages seeking adventure and a spectacular view, Karen’s Preserve offers a true refuge.

Thanks to the generosity of our community and supporters like you, Karen’s Preserve was conserved forever in 2008 in order to protect important wildlife habitat – including a critical portion of the Round Valley mule deer herd’s migration corridor (learn more here).

Formerly known as Crowley Hilltop Preserve, this property was renamed Karen’s Preserve in 2013 to honor the inspiring and influential woman who helped conserve it: Karen Ferrell-Ingram. Karen played a central role in founding Eastern Sierra Land Trust in 2001; she has worn many hats over the years, including former Lands Director and Executive Director of ESLT. Without her dedication and purposefulness, our organization would not be here today.

More Information about Crayons & Paint:
